Table Numbers

January 20th, 2012

In the grand scheme of event planning, table numbers are probably not the host’s number one concern.  Typically, as long as they are there, you’re guests are golden.  However, though they do not have the power to break an event, they do have potential to make it.  Sprucing up your table numbers can boost your decor, add to your theme and exceed your guest’s expectations.  Check out our favorite ways to group guests and get some inspiration!

Telling the Story of “Us”

Using the numbers as meaningful points in your relationship.  For example, 3: the number of kids we want; 7 the longest number of days we have gone without seeing each other.  This has Hallmark moments written all over it!

Wine Bottle Labels

Many times, hosts will put a bottle or two of red and white wine on each table for dinner — why not kill 2 birds with 1 stone?!

… At that age

How fun and precious!!  Your guests would enjoy seeing you at your cutest, best,… and worst!  Also, walking around to all of the tables would be a great distraction during cocktail hour — a time when some newlyweds enjoy taking pictures together!

Anniversary Advice

LOVE this! Here guests can leave the bride and groom advice and tips for a successful future.  Whether it be funny and/or meaningful, it serves as a great activity for the newlyweds to look forward to on each year they spend together.  Doing this could also be a fun alternative to signing a guestbook!

Centerpieces

If you are looking for something more simple while still giving that extra touch, why not incorporate your table assignments and centerpieces?  With all of the china, flatware, glassware, wine bottles, etc., already being on the table, the area could stand to be a bit less busy.  Doing this puts a creative and subtle touch on the overall event design!  After all, less is more, right?

Let There Be Light

December 20th, 2011

“Light creates the environment, and environment creates the mood, and the mood creates the experiences.  Light is one singular experience between an average event and a great one.” –Bentley Meeker

We couldn’t agree more with that statement.  Though dressing up event design with table sizes and layouts can we fun, especially when that is paired with specialty linens and creative centerpieces, the dramatics can only go as far as the floor space given.  However, since lighting takes up virtually no space, it can be used to create a special experience between you and your guests.

For example, how would you feel walking into a venue like this?  Does this setting not create a mood that puts you in a holiday spirit?  The lighting makes you feel like you are literally in a winter wonderland just with gobos and snowflake stencils!  Additionally, because it is so over the top, your guests can tell that there was a lot of work and planning involved in making this event as breathtaking as it is.  This allows them to feel honored and privileged to be apart of it.

In this photo, the design was created through LED lights shown from the bottom of white pipe and drape.  With the placement and the color being shown from the bottom and fading out to the top, it reminds us of flames or that gives the illusion that the drape is on fire?  Either way, it gives a warm vibe to the room as well as a relaxed feeling among your guests (as long as they can tell that the drape is not actually on fire)!

Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree

December 13th, 2011

If you’re looking for a fun and easy way to decorate your holiday table,  use ornaments!!  They are simple, spirited, and very affordable (especially if you make them yourself)!

Here, you can use use them as small table vases by putting the flowers and water in the hanging hole at top and cutting  another piece and gluing underneath — voila!!

Hanging them in a row above your table could look awesome too!  However, we would suggest using translucent fishing line (to give it a floating feel) and maybe staggering them in distance from ceiling to table.

Lastly, we love the way the ornaments are used on this table on three separate levels!  Using them as a centerpiece looks great and pairing it with foliage, makes it resemble a Christmas tree.  Putting them on top candle holders, accents the centerpiece exceptionally, as well as displaying a simple ornament on the table!

It’s not ALWAYS rude to gawk..

Burlap, Burlap, Burlap

December 1st, 2011

Ever worked with burlap before?  If so, you probably know why we find it necessary to dedicate an entire blog to the use of it!  Not only can it add THAT extra detail that all hosts and coordinators are looking for when planning their event, but we also love it because of how versatile, simple, and downright affordable it is!!  The color can go with pretty much any palette, making it possible to use for pretty much any occasion, and when you can buy 30 yards of it for 11 dollars — well, that makes pretty much any party planning budget!

Literally, ANYTHING — chair sashes, silverware ties, runners, overlays, curtains, place settings… and so much more!!! Know why we are so in love?

Pick-Apart the Thanksgiving Table

November 22nd, 2011

Hmm . . . what to discuss first?  Maybe we should start by mentioning that we are aware that there is A LOT going on – A LOT, A LOT!!  So, with that being said, we also feel it’s important to address that this was designed for an artistic, not functional, purpose and can still offer great ideas on designing your next table (just maybe not all at once)!!

For instance, we can appreciate the whirlwind centerpieces from a creative standpoint because it makes the guest feel like they are walking into a gusty fall day, especially paired with the hanging leaves.  Unfortunately, this layout is not very practical, even for the most extravagant dinner parties.  But, if one wanted to convey this look, we think that removing the centerpieces and leaving the ceiling leaves could achieve a similar windy feel without overwhelming the individuals attending.

As for the bottom portion of the photo, we are going to go with the old advice of, “less is more.”  It is understandable that often people want to add variety to their event to get that “wow” factor, but it’s important to remember that variety and quantity are not the same thing.  In this photo, there are too many flower vases and would suggest picking one type and use only that.  Or, it might look nice to combine both, eliminate the green boxes, and add some nice foliage to the arrangement.  This would still achieve all fall colors while not overpowering the table.  Building on that same concept, unless that decorative green box has a present in it, it is not necessary for guests to have both that and a grape vine at their seat.  Eliminating one or interchanging the two with every other setting would be sufficient.

There can be TONS more said about this photo, so give us your thoughts!!

TOP off your event!

November 17th, 2011

Looking to knock the socks off of your guests? Possibly leave them speechless? Well, tent liners might just be the key in awe-ing your attendees. Draping from the walls, though can be done beautifully, is common and serves its purpose . . . or what most think its purpose is. However, draping from the ceiling?  Now THAT has the potential to add originality, depth, and that certain “spark” to make your party top notch!

How you ask?  Well, let’s take a beautiful wedding we did this past summer.   Hanging fabric from a center point that reaches to all tent angles allows guests to feel more included, whether they are on the dance floor, or enjoying a quiet conversation at a cocktail table in the corner.  This idea is a key factor in planning a party because not everyone attending knows one another and the last thing you want to do is make someone feel out of place!

Another way to jazz up a celebration is by lining the entire top of your venue with fabric!  In addition to it being a GORGEOUS look, tent liners open up the space to make it appear larger than it is.  They also can hide its boning and soften the overall structure.  So obviously, if you’re not sold on the overall look of a tent for your event, this can be a saving grace!

Pick- Apart this SQUARE Table

November 15th, 2011

One of the latest trends in event design, as well as our newest obsession at Flexx, is square tables and believe that this photo explains why!  Since a 5′ round is the most commonly used table at social gatherings, the square design offers a refreshing twist not only to the event world in general, but also to guests who are used to seeing round tables in settings like these.  In addition to it being aesthetically appealing, a square table is just as practical as a round; it seats 8 people comfortably and allows all guest to visually see one another, thus, encouraging conversation.  In our book, all of those ideas get a CHECK PLUS!

As far as table elements go, we find the square plates to be a great repetition of shapes; however we are curious — what would a circular plate look like?  Perhaps it would be the perfect contrast?  Something else we are questioning is the centerpiece.  Though we think it is beautiful and love the way the yellow is tied in with each guest’s individual flower, is it too big?  Or more so, will guests find it hard to see the person diagonal to them?  If so, will it discourage the overall communication at the table?  It is a subject to ponder and on that note, we would like to turn it to you!  Give us some feedback!

Pick-Apart the Photo: FALL Edition

November 8th, 2011

What we love about this table is that it screams AUTUMN and not just because of its obvious bright red, fiery orange, and light yellow color use.  We love it because of how the colors interact with the design to make the table pop from a basic white linen and china start to an all-around fall vibe!  For example, placing the different colored vases in a staggering row gives the table depth without taking away from the potential interaction of guests.  Also, does anyone else notice how the vases serve as both a centerpiece AND a runner (kill two birds with one stone)?!  Something worth recognizing in this design is the use of gold chivari chairs.  Gold chairs can be hard to match, and if not done correctly, can put an event over the top; however, we think they provided a great accent color to the table and tied theme in very well!  Lastly we move on to the pom-pom balls . . . how do you all out there feel?  Personally, we like them but think they could be raised slightly higher.  By being so low, there is no division between them and the table — something we believe is necessary when there is a lot going on.  What does everyone else think?  Yay or nay?  We love hearing your feedback!
